Amusingly, the registration process means that this product of 1970s Coventry is now listed as 'an important work of Polish art' for which a permit is required to drive across the border and an export licence will be necessary if I ever want to sell it abroad. So yesterday in celebration of a slight easing of the Scottish lockdown and the cycling Monument that is today's Tour of Flanders I was out for a bike ride round the lanes of Lanarkshire. Bit cold at the start but a beautiful day. That is a greybeard who the young blades are quite sure they should be able to drop..... but can’t I was thinking I might go out on my bike this afternoon but I might have to have a lie down instead.... Oh... and also how good your saddle is and how much Sudocream you have with you. Before a "significant" birthday loomed, I decided to do a solo unsupported Le-Jog ride. It was something I wanted to do for ages and I wasn't getting any younger. It took me 13 days, 987 miles. Shortest day was 45 miles (Cornwall hills), longest was 118 miles (A9 in Scotland) and I slept in B&Bs and Travelodges. When I got to JOG I felt as though I could have turned round and ridden back home. I'd lost a stone and a half in weight and felt as fit as a fiddle. I did raise a good amount of money for my efforts which went to our local Air Ambulance, who played a big part in saving my son's life a year or so earlier. Nick Jones Posted April 25, 2021 Share Posted April 25, 2021 Do yesterday I got to deliver the Spitfire, which has been over-wintering in Somerset, down the road a bit to Devon. Senior Management followed in the Vitesse (there was some minor grousing about the weight of the steering). Spitty delivered to its keeper. Pity I hadn’t pushed the dipstick quite fully home meaning it had managed to make a bit of a mess by blowing oil out of the gap.... oops Then some Devon lanes in convoy and...... a pub lunch...... a very excellent one too even without the novelty value, even if the wind was a bit on the sharp side. Nick Jones Posted May 5, 2021 Share Posted May 5, 2021 A bit belated but Sunday, thanks to the generosity of John D donating his pit crew passes, Chris and I got to go to a race meeting. Travelled up to Thruxton in the GT6 in bright sunshine (was not warm though) and gained entry without question. We then did a couple of laps of the paddock area looking for a certain green Vitesse (which wasn't there because it was already in the assembly area) before parking up and trying again on foot. Didn't take long to track John down - useful things mobile phones! Atmosphere was nicely normal in many respects, though plenty of masks in evidence. Was quiet when we arrived due to being the "church break", but as soon as that was over, John's group, the "Swinging Sixties" was out to practice. I seem to have got out of the habit of taking photos so most of these were taken by Chris, whose camera work is definitely improving. So JOhn went out.... and for 3 or 4 laps seemed to be going very well (well, 160 bhp is enough to hustle a Vitesse along pretty well!) in spite of a known gearbox issue (more power brings new problems!). Then he stopped coming round...... uh oh..... So we went and found him, just rolled in from the pitlane and pushed him back to his paddock spot. Not the anticipated gearbox problem but engine problems now. I'll let John tell the story when he's ready, but no more action this day..... Very few other Triumphs present..... Just a nice TR6 in John's series (and class)...... And this Sprint in a different series. Also in John's series and the outright winner of the race.... This wee monster. A Griffith complete with very angry sounding 4.7L V8. Think he lapped most of the field. Reckon he was praying pretty hard for the rain to hold off too, looked like it had potential to be a handful even in the dry! Two more in John's series with the 240Z being the winner of his class. Also a small infestation of Minis, a A40, various Midgets, a couple more Alfas, a Lotus Cortina and a couple of BMW 2002s. Even a Mini Marcos and a Marcos 1800. Really nice, eclectic collection of machinery, though must leave you wondering a bit on who you are really racing! Speaking of eclectic.... in another series E30s, Porsche 924 & 944 and an Aston DB5...... Plus another Marcos, various Ginettas, a pack of Mk1 & mk2 Escorts and plenty else I've forgotten Although there were some very posh "Big Rig" support vehicles, the Aston boys were roughing it. Like their style.... ... looked like they were trying properly too! Couple of others form the pits Though this one was just visiting So we had a nice day out.... John.... not quite so much.
