Escadrille Ecosse
This is the point where the volume of the car seems to expand exponentially! As Nick says, getting serious

Get ready to fill the loft and then wonder where it all came from, more so when the car is back on the road and the loft is still half full of car! hardhatharry
Bonnet off and stripped ready for the blaster, had some fun getting that off by myself. Started stripping the door for reskinning but Mr Haynes was having difficulty expaining how to get the glass and mech out.

BiTurbo228
Fibreglass ones are 16kg lighter and they're still a faff! Well done manhandling the steel one.
hardhatharry
Realised I hadn't updated this thread for a while so here is the update. Doors, bootlid and bonnet was sent to get blasted in garnet, as its less corrosive, and here is the result......a rather holy result. Nick Jones
That actually looks quite good. Or at least better than any of ours were! Yes, it's gone along the front edge, but round the headlights is good - and the front edge is fairly easy to fix. What the support structure underneath like? Bootlid looks good as does the passenger door. Drivers door more of a challenge. Could be repaired - or re-skin. Nick
hardhatharry
Started with the bonnet an managed to source the rare nose repair piece and 2 wings.

hardhatharry
Also reskinned the drivers door and brassed braised for the first time. Unfortunately I didnt take a picture of the completed bonnet but you can see it in the back ground. Put everything into etch primer ready for putting some of it back on the car
hardhatharry
Next to sort out the rear drivers side wing, when I purchased the Spit it wasnt fitted but I got a outer wheel arch and rear wing in with the deal. I was supposed to get an inner wing but I never materialised so I just bought one.
hardhatharry
Unfortunately I ran out of gas before I could weld the outer wing, so that will be this weekends task. Then its the great interior strip down in preparation to put the body on the rotisserie and work on the floor which isnt too bad and check out the chassis. hardhatharry
Also done well on the eBay side too. A set of adjustable Spax shocks which although they were fitted to a car were never used, need a bit of paint but everything works £43 and a set of Hel braided lines for £20 So adjustable shocks all round for the cost on 1 new shock.... result. Currently searching for a cheap set of lowering springs
hardhatharry
Anyone know if these will do the job, I was looking for a 1" drop and I believe 7 1/4" may work so this would just need a spacer their springs lengths increase in 1" steps, they also do a heavier weight (they seem to go up in 50 lbs weights) COIL OVER SPRING 7" - 2.25 X 350LB £24 each spring
hardhatharry
I see the general consensus is to fit brace bars across the door gaps to stop the body flexing when fitted to the rotisserie. Has anyone got any advice on bar thickness, positioning and how to fit (are they welded?)??
hardhatharry
A little more done this morning while it chucks it down with rain. Knowing that the boot lid is a place that attracts rot I have covered the underside with Hydrate 8 I have also taken the paint of the passenger side door hinges and painted then in primer. My driveway is quite steep and a few weeks ago I nearly lost the spitfire down the drive which could have been a disaster so I have been on the hunt for a winch. I picked one up last week and the pictures didn't do it justice, I currently figuring out how to mount it. It has 30 metres of 6 tonne rating strap. Escadrille Ecosse
That it a pretty substantial winch! The door bracing bars don't need to be enormous. I have used Dexion in the past. Done the job fine. I do recommend though that you put in a triangle to stop the bulkhead end from closing and dropping. Bar straight across near the top and a diagonal bottom back to meet top front. hardhatharry
More progress today finally glued the rear wing on and sorted out some missing metal on the bottom of the door recess, a momentous occasion the last time this spitfire had a driver rear wing was 1993. Also fitted the passenger door on and put a coat of paint on the bottom of the boot lid.
