Martin
hmmm, …. to bin or not to bin? to weld or not to weld?? What are your opinions? Cheers Martin
JohnD
Only weld if a replacement is unobtanium. And most importantly, why? Bent rear engine plate?? Else it'll recur.
Nick Jones
I doubt whether that is a rare/expensive enough piece to trouble with welding and refinishing. Agree with John on identifying the cause.....
rogerguzzi
Hello Martin Just find a friend with a lathe and make a new one!(I made one for my spitfire when fitting an oil seal and found the factory made the later ones longer!) Roger ps details on here somewhere!
Martin
Found out that Canley lists them for 25 GBP. I do have a small lathe and in the workshop next to mine there is a machine shop with lathe and cnc mill facilities. The cause? The bellhousing is straight. Whether the Backplate of the engine was bent, no idea I bought the gearbox and bellhousing separately (Stoneleigh some years ago) as spares. Gt6s
Spigot shaft took a knock. Welding ? Good luck cast iron
RogerH
Is it cast iron ? Not all cast things are cast iron. Roger
Nick Jones
I think these were originally. Quite hard and good friction/wear properties. Looking at Martins original pic the crack looks like a cast iron crack..... Doesn't mean it couldn't be made from steel though. Think they are the same as Dolly 1850 - if so I have a couple in their native bellhousings.
Martin
It would be nice Nick, if you had a look at the 1850 ones. Do you need some measures from the GT6 one?
Gt6s
Yup cast iron.

I have a non seal type I removed from my Spitfire if it the right size you can have it. I will try and find it tomorrow and measure it Roger
Nick Jones
I think the 6 pot ones all have seals. May be bigger ID too? Martin, will check later. I don’t have a known GT6 /Vitesse one so dimensions would help.

rogerguzzi
Hello All Have checked Nick is right bigger o/d and I/D (1.308" O/D 1.000"I/D 1.500" long were carrier fits) but the Spitfire one fitted the Vitesse into the bell housing(may have been a touch loose but that may be the housing?) Martin
…. and the Diameter where it is pressed into the bellhousing is 46mm
Nick Jones
Looks like Dolly 1850 is the same few wear scratches and some light corrosion but no significant damage and l think it’s good to go again. Where would you like it sent? Do you need the little dowel pin as well ..... or the clutch pivot pin?
Martin
The dowel pin I could save. But if it it came to Germany with the clutch pivot pin this would be great. Will send you a pm
Martin
Today I completed the gearbox. Thanks again Nick. There are 3 springs that give some pressure to the laygear thrust. Part 137532. Have a look. With the longer ones the laygear was more or less blocked. I do not remember where the longer ones came from.
Nick Jones
The longer ones look more normal..... but as you say, they can make the gearbox very tight. Some gearboxes have none.
