Uses of a transverse spring

Recommended Posts

We've all come across so-called classics experts who treat the Triumph transverse spring suspension with contempt.     Perhaps you would like to point them to the Cooper T51, the first rear engined car to win a Manufacturer's World Championship, that set the mould for the future of F1.   This excellent drawing (even more execellent in the original) featured in an article about the car, and the Climax engine that powered it, in this months' issue of MotorSport.

Earlier Coopers had a front transverse spring as well, legacy of the two original Topolino fronts, welded together by John Cooper to make his first 500cc racer, but the world changer had double wishbones and coil overs.    Familiar?
