2018 Club Triumph at John o' Groats (Picture heavy)

Here is a selection of photos I took at John o' Groats on Saturday 6th October during the 2018 Club triumph Round Britain Reliability Run.
The weather was rather dull and a bit wet alas.

The 2000 range were (as usual?) the most numerous and the small saloons were also well represented. In all th times I have been going to Groats to see the RBRR
this is the first time that I didn't seen Nigel Gair's French blue 2000.
Among the small chassis cars I didn't see a single Vitesse but there were two Heralds (I wasn't able to photograph the red/white one).
The newest car was an Acclaim and I guess the oldest was a Standard Ten (whose twin exhausts suggest it maybe isn't so standard...?).

Sadly, I understand that this Stag had to be retired on Saturday night after it was accidentally refuelled with diesel in Lancashire.

The "10" was at Badgers Halt Dartmoor lunchtime today, if I have it right the engine had on;y done 5 miles (and the car about the same) after rebuild at the start of the event (now that's confidence for you!) Also explains why the owner said the engine was running better and smoother as they came back down hill from J-o-G.

Great pics!

Saw most of them today at Badgers Holt on Dartmoor. There were quite a few had some mechanical "adventures" this year I think.

Great to meet you and Nuala Phil. Trust the rest went ok. Must of met either Ben or Vicky too...... Met lots of people, many familiar faces and some new ones too. Good day!

Craig now delivered to the ferry and (presumably) en route to France.

Excellent pictures, including one of Nuala's yellow Spitfire (with yellow hardtop) that I was co-driver!

Ohh, and yes there was one Vitesse, completed the run and by Christ it could shift!

Hi Phil,
is that the Spitfire that is powered by an MX5 engine?
(I saw an underbonnet photo on the RBRR facebook page).

Nope, Nuala's spitty has a very well tuned 1500, and by God it goes! Plenty power and torque up to 4000 for normal driving, and the real power comes in after 4000. Gave a few cars a bit of a surprise on the RBRR I think!

That is coupled with uprated suspension, we also received several compliments about how it holds the road (for which I was also very grateful for, Nuala does like taking corners with errrrmmm, what you might call enthusiasm).

Cheers,

Phil

I think Ferny and the Hezda got passed Bude before rear wheel bearing failure at about noon on Sunday

Yes, went through Bude but didn't get as far as Badgers Holt.  Pretty sure it was a front wheel bearing (think that's what Doug said - he'd stopped to see if there was anything he could do) - outcome was the same though......

Deffo rear. He called me. Initially thought it was a UJ (that is a sod of a job at the side of the road, I would imagine) but then found it was the rear hub bearing.

It is advancing his plans for a scooby diff. I will be getting a visit in a couple of weeks. I gave him some MGF rear uprights etc a while ago, and seem to have a spare 3.7 LSD he is sniffing round.

I think we were all a bit "vague", and so many people makes it difficult to speak to everybody.... We will bump into each other at some event. One day.

Now, slightly odd question. Are you far from Livingstone?

Nope, about an hour away.

Not so odd a question, I have already emailed Dirk and offered my assistance, either in checking or collecting on my trailer and taking to Nuala's place in the lakes with a dry garage!

You only have to experience the consequences of mid corner lift off once - to appreciate the need to maintain power when cornering a Spitfire - braking needs to be progressive and preferably with all wheels pointing in the same direction.

Agreed, though a long-shaft, swing spring car is pretty benign compared to the earlier short-shaft, fixed spring offerings.  As for an unmodified mk1 GT6......:pinch:

Herald and Vitesse a bit less snappy due to longer wheelbase.  Only the roto cars can stand a mid corner lift without causing a "moment" - still best not to do it though!
