Hello from Dorset

Recommended Posts

Hi.

I’m another from the other side (TRR), it’s just not the same there anymore and I was getting a bit lonely. I’ve been loitering here for a while and recognise many members, so I thought I would join.

I own a TR6 PI CP car and a low mileage Lancia Beta Coupe (no rust :-) ) oh and a half share of a classic mini with my Son which needs an engine rebuild.

I hope I can make a useful contribution to forum.

Cheers

Kev.

Welcome Kev!  I'm in south Somerset myself and work in Dorset so we're neighbours more or less.

Haven't seen a Lancia Beta in a while, especially a coupe.  Nice cars and advanced for their time, but tin-worm ate most of them.

Cheers

Nick

Hi Kev

I was drooling over a Beta Monte Carlo a couple of weeks ago, close to our British Cars stand here.  Mint condition and - for the sake of my marriage - I got away lightly when the owner told me very firmly that it wasn't for sale.

Hi Kevin,

Good to see you over here.

I do like your Beta. You only got it a year or so ago didn't you? I think I remember you saying over at the other place about buying it. Back in the mid 80s I had a Beta HPE. It was the first decent car I owned. Sadly it rusted away in my parents' front garden and had to be removed with a crane. I've got some pictures of the horror somewhere that I'll post here, but be warned they are upsetting.

Cheers, Darren

Hi Paul, yes the Monte Carlo is a nice motor. Always best to keep the Mrs happy.

Hi Darren

I bought the Beta just over 2 years ago to be a daily driver but not long after I had to retire, subsequently I’ve only done about a hundred miles in it. The windscreen went over winter so I’m try to sort that out as well replacing the head gasket on the TR6. Not enough hours in the day, god knows how I found the time to run a business. Yes I do remember you telling me about your HPE, what a shame.

cheers Kev.

The red one being offered here for the equivalent of a smidge over £3k is a bargain.  Looks to be in super condition.

Certainly better value than the very tatty California import JPS Special targa being offered for nearly £8k on the same website.

That looks quite good Paul, you would have to go over it with a fine tooth comb though. Prices for Beta’s are just going up a little but still very low seeming they are quite rare.

I still feel shame and regret when I look at those photos, because I should have never have let it get in such a state. Although, I'm not sure I could have done anything to stop that vicious little tin worm.

I reckon I bought that car in about '87. It was the first decent one I had. I distinctly remember driving along a straight bit of road near where I lived, getting up close to the car in front and almost driving into the back of it, because I'd booted it and not anticipated how fast it would accelerate. In the cars I owned previously, I'd have to start an overtake from half mile back, build up speed and hope that by the time I reached the car in front it would be clear to get past. Good practice for thinking ahead!

It all started to go wrong when some idiot reversed his lorry into it, crumpled the bonnet, and then drove off. I'm pretty sure I was fully comp at that stage, but for some reason I didn't get it repaired. Then there was an engine issue of some kind, and the garage told me that their labour change was £27 an hour and that the job with parts would be around £250. That was enough to make me decide to go out and buy yet another car. I think I was averaging about 1 new car every year back then.

Despite the rust and other problems, that Lancia still holds some special memories.
