Car diversity - a good thing?

Recommended Posts

I used to drive a very old and chronically underpowered 8 wheeler.  The reg plate was B*** UAH.  It was affectionately known as Useless A*se Hole in the yard.  One day I got back and said to the relief driver "You won't believe it, I've just been overtaken by a bicycle going up Finborough Hill!"   He replied "Well when I drove it last week, I was overtaken by a jogger going past Wattisham Camp!"  Not long afterwards, said relief driver did me a huge favour and turned it over in a quarry, writing it off.

Hello All

              20 HP  pure luxury!

This is in my garage having a bit of TLC is a Bond Minicar with a Villiers 198cc engine with about 3 to 5 bhp at best

It has been upgraded to electric start! instead of opening the bonnet and kick starting it!

So if thrown off a cliff it would probably do 40 MPH

Roger

ps they made a 4 seater!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Surely doesn't count Peter as not road-registered?  How about this, -  20 raging horsepower and just over 60 flat out, if you are brave enough.

Rob, We're neck and neck on HP, but mine bends in the middle and will go up a 45 deg slope, bucket first !! Peter

Brilliantly different vehicles; any pics of that 8-wheeler, Vicky? No-one could induce me to think ill of a Bond; they just have sthg, for me - and probably still faster than the Landy. Might let you know, after l've picked it up tomoz and clogged it up the A1...

And that so sweet MG; rather nimbler than the LR, and possibly near it over rough terrain, too!

Just realised what Citroen did with the name of that camionette. Glorious thing.

I've got some pics of some of my other old trucks, but not the 8 wheeler.  It was in the days before digital cameras, and it wasn't worth wasting film on!!  I was secretly rather fond of it as it earned as much as the other trucks in the yard and didn't owe anybody anything.

Peter, is that your tool? It looks jolly useful.....I could do with one here (that is a hint, Ben!).

Rob, That is a very, very pretty MG.....I think it would really suit me.  (Ben, we need a bigger garage).

Roger, 3-5 bhp, are you serious? That is smaller than most peoples lawn mowers these days!!!  I think you might be winning this one!

Rod, you are winning the style prize.  You don't want to be driving that one too quickly otherwise no-one can appreciate those classic good looks.

As for your Defender 90, Tim, we look forward to seeing some pictures.  They are ruddy uncomfortable to drive, have dreadfully vague steering and wouldn't pull a hen of a nest, but they will go anywhere!  Once you have got it up the A1 what are your plans for it? Some off roading I hope..........then you will have some serious fun with it!  Have a safe trip.

Vicky x

Well, got it (the Landy) home, after chopping in my Morris Minor 1275 against it. So l still have only four old bangers : ). Have to say l was pleasantly surprised by the (relative) directness of the steering, and it tootles along effortlessly (if noisily :D) at 60.

Interesting project.  We have a stream that crosses our garden, which likes to "go underground" and needs lining.  I seriously looked at concrete canvas but even with their "special offcuts prices" it was going to be £ 1200 for materials alone.

Yes it was expensive about £25 per sq meter- 30 adds up. But if the stream blocked there it would go downhill striaght into the cottage, and worse, the garage. So it had to be done.

In my experience pipes are a big liability. it only takes a stick and leaves to block a 12 inch culvert in minutes. I'd go for an open ditch anyday if there are trees around

Mattius: Courage, mate! Get that Spitty back on the road! I know what you mean about managing a clutch of old bangers. It's worse than having dogs - at least with dogs you can exercise them all at the same time :D... l'm finding the LR a hoot, much quicker, more wieldy and less noisy than the 'received wisdom' holds.

Rod - hi: l gather that all ex-MoD stuff now sells through one specialist, and this one had been privately pre-owned after de-mob in '10, so it came thru a used-car dealer. I uncovered the manufacturer's plate in the cab today, [pristine condition, tho that's not to say the rest of the machine is : )...] and it is stamped 'MoD'. That said, it appears to have been re-engined recently and the chassis is v.clean indeed, with a new diesel tank. And there's me, saying all those years: 'l'll never get a diseasel'!  :D
