Grinding Of Main And Big-Ends On A Six Crank?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

How long does it take to grind 4 mains and six big-ends, 0.04" to a final surface of +/- 0.001"?

I ask because I witnessed a six with 7 mains having the above done in under 130 seconds, that seemed very quick?

Cheers,

Iain.

Hi

I've been quoted £200 + Vat at three different machine shops to have a 6 cylinder crank reground, so maybe their process takes longer?

Well from crank grinding I've watched it takes the 130 sec to index the wheel from one journal to the next! Was this some massive multi wheel grinder that did them all at once?

The engine shop I used took longer than that polishing each of the the journals afterwards!

Re £200, going rate seems to be £15 -£20 a journal so probably not way over priced.

Hi,

yes, it was a twin grinding wheel system. The big ends were ground via the grinding wheels following the journal as it was rotating.

The machine I saw was for OEM.'s.

The technology is at micron level.

Thanks,

Iain.
