I think my gearbox is having a bit of an off year so far, reasons being:
First is becoming increasingly hard to get into, it took five attempts on Friday afternoon, it's like it has two stages, one where it pops out if you try and let the clutch up, and one where it's first.
Second has always been nasty, when going from 1st - 2nd either you double declutch or take it slowly, rush it and you get a nasty buzz up your arm, or worse, a crunch.
Third has a similar buzz when you go from fourth to third, doesn't often buzz from 2nd to 3rd, but it has done.
Fourth visibly pulls backwards when you accelerate, and forwards when you let off. Although it doesn't crunch or buzz!
Reverse used to be quite nice, then you had to engage it whilst at about 1,200rpm so it didn't crunch. Then, whilst turning round in a mate's drive, it dissapeared, replaced by a nasty crunchy grinding noise! Reappeared next time I drove it, but it still crunches really nastily when you engage, if you slot it in quickly there's no crunch but there is a very loud ka-thunk :/
Any ideas? I thought the clutch might need bleeding, although I did that not very long ago...
Cheers, Aaron

Cold weather can make things clunky, especially if it is filled with EP90 (80 makes this a little easier)
In all honesty is sounds like it may be past its best. If non-od good used ones are cheap, if overdrive you may prefer to get yours looked at (I know a good chap fairly local, he is GOOD with gearboxes. He will be at stoneleigh with me)

Sounds more clutch related to me - though it's probably fair to see the gearbox is also a bit weary.

Should have said, none-OD, single rail 1500 gearbox, mounted to a NOS clutch. Very, very leaky, filled with EP90.
I will bleed it again - although it being cold may have something to do with it - I know dad's car's gearbox is barely useable in the summer until the engine's warmed ti up!

Hmmm, fair enough - although the noises are normally from the engine, not the gearbox!
Sideways in snow can't cause many problems can it? I got my push bike sideways in this!

Did about 50 miles today, and if I double de-clutch every change it's lovely!
Reverse is still a thunk, and there's a buzzing through the clutch sometimes. So I think it's the clutch

As seen I now have two spare gearboxes, with two more to follow next month
The current box is pretty nice when it's cold, I assume because the oil's thicker and is damping everything more? However, coming down the A3 last night at 70 (which was quite a struggle with the missfire), as I slowed for the roundabout 3rd decided it didn't want to play anymore, it was a slow change from 4th, with full clutch and I'd blipped the throttle to bring the engine up to the right speed, but I just got buzz at. Tried again, having declutched, but it was having none of it, so I slowed with the brakes in neutral for a bit then went for second, which slotted in nicely. Accelerating away from the roundabout 3rd still didn't want to be used, even though I double-declutched first.
Slotted into fourth and used the torque to bring me up to 70 again.

Well, to solve this I've done my usual trick of getting lots of spare ones... four in fact, three non overdrive three rail boxes and one overdrive three rail box in dire need of reconning!
So, any idea what the numbers on this one mean?

Cheers, Aaron
