Any window experts out there?

The drivers side window on my brother's E46 323i will go down but not up.

The motor will only turn in one direction (i.e. to open the window) whether the switch is in 'up' or 'down' mode.

We tried a rear window and as you'd expect, that motor changes direction to open /close the window. Connect the rear window motor to the supply for the front window and it'll only turn in one direction.

Fit the front motor to the rear window's power supply and it turns in both directions.

I guess it points to a faulty driver's window switch?

Thanks, next step is to try another switch and see if the window works properly.

There are only two wires to the motor in the door. I expected three, but I guess the switch reverses the polarity of the two wires to change the direction of the motor rather than there being a +ve for each direction of the motor. Shame I didn't have my multimeter with me. Still worth double checking for broken wires in the door hinge area though.

Unless there is an ECU / control unit somewhere which fires electricity to the right place when triggered by the switch.........

My brother complains that his 323i auto seems a little gutless but today we took a 0-60 time of 8.9 seconds.

No racing start, uphill, 2 bikes on the roof rack, and of course, 190,000 miles on the clock. Probably not too much wrong with it...........

In fairness, it does seem a bit lacking in low down torque but goes well when revved, I suspect the VANOS variable cam timing thing may be past its best.
