Vinyl

My parents are moving out of the family home and so everything is being pulled out of the depths of the loft.

One thing to come out is my dads vinyl collection.

So on Saturday I bought a turntable — spent a morning picking through and finding I have inadvertently inherited his taste in music.

After that I almost did my back in pulling out the LPs

Last time I looked through them they meant very little to me and now it means everything.

I love the open sound they give as I find more than half the collection are part of mine too.

Nuclear Physics (!)

You guys are all keen engineers and technologists. Now that NASA is no longer shooting the Moon, the place that leads the world in raw engineering must be CERN, the home of the Large Hadron Collider. CERN takes very seriously it's mission to inform, and has an online library of excellent videos about all sorts of activities, showing some superb bits of engineering, some excellent teaching, and some way out there mad boffin-ness!

I looked at this one because I happened upon a video about "Roman Pots" at CERN. No they aren't archeology, they are wonderful machined pieces of kit, that - well, let Prof Karsten Eggert explain:
http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1201265

The recent announcements from CERN about the latest on the Higgs caused all sorts of newsprint excitement, but here is the official Cern Symposium that set it all off. Way over my head, but look at that audience - the cumulative IQ must be more than ever assembled in one place! http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1406786

But to prove that partical physicists do have a GSoH, sort of, see the Christmas panto. "TinTin and the Higgs"! Complete with a French Capt. Haddock as the boson itself!
http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1406841

Enjoy and maybe, learn!

Arduino

Thought id share my pet project with you guys,

Programming old 1970s computers all day has got me back into the liking of proper computer coding. Combined with the fact these computers are archaic and keep on failing means we get to interact with proper computer design as well.

i bought one of these a year or so ago and ocassionaly played with it, now i've decided to put it to good use.

Its a basic modular programming and electrical development unit, allowing you to control hundreds of different things with a simple microprocessor chip.

I've just ordered up a GPS module, once i get that up and running, i'll add an accelerometer, then possibly a gyro and on and on

The idea is to create a black box data recorder, with the GPS i should be able to record co-ordinates, with a real time clock added i should be able to work out speeds, with the accelerometer i should be able to get somewhere near g-force readings.

Im gonna start out basic and see how much the memory can hold before i run out of space for code, but im hoping it will be possible to add movement sensors for throttle suspension etc.

Im just playing really, but it all should be possible.

Eco Trip: Paper Bricks And Loft Insulation

Ok so as most people know I'm currently saving for my paint job for the T6 which means I need to act as skint as possible and save as much as I can. However this got me thinking how else I can save £££.

The house I live in belongs to the now wife, so when we met I never bothered to check it had insulation as I wasn't paying the heating bill. Things changed and we were married in June. Now WE pay for the heating. It doesn't cost much as it's electric only. However the house is currently up for sale so when the home report came back saying we have very poor insulation I decided to have a look in the loft. What it should have read was some one has stolen the insulation as there was non there!!!!!

So I took a trip to the local ECO place and decided to get the guy's there to insulate the loft and I also wanted to see about multi fuel stoves. So the guy's are coming hopefully next week to do the insulation( I'm away but the wifes in) but we need to speak to the counsel about fitting the stove as our house is B listed. So while I was looking at stoves the guy mentioned you can make your own paper bricks/logs which burn for 1-2 hour. So I went out and bought this:

So I came home with this free fuel tool. The basic's of paper bricks is:
1.soak paper/junk mail/magazines in water over night.
2.Place in brick maker and crush/compress.
3.remove brick and store in dry place to dry out.
4.Make sure brick is dry and wrap in a plastic bag to stop moisture re-absorption.
5.Remove from bag and Burn on fire

Unfortunately in the first attempt we added thin card. This was a mistake as the card doesn't break down into a mash very well and so we ended up with 1x broken device and one crap brick:

Still usable but non the less crap. So the next time we used just newspaper after I fixed the brick maker. This worked much better, we filled two 5 liter buckets and made 9 paper bricks as picture on the box. I made a space in the Gardening shed and will check them in 10 days. Hopefully they will be dry but more importantly you can make free fuel which in total took 2 hour for 9 bricks. Which comes in at about 9-18 hrs of free fuel. Winner.

So fingers crossed the counsel will ok our stove and we will be running almost carbon free. I also might have found an almost endless supply of newspapers. Total winner.

Any one try anything similar???

Am currently open to any other money saving ideas???

Reading

Well.
I had a stunted start to life, I had no interest in books really, even at school. As such I missed out on the experience.

This is as much down to my mentality as anything else, books were slow and boring. I needed constant action smashin up my lego etc.

Keen to get into the theraputic qualities of reading again.

I got big into it travelling. I haven't read a jot in my hand for 8 years, bar psychology books, which aren't really light reading matter.

I've been chewing through a Tai-Chi book and also a George Orwells Animal Farm.

Got the HitchHikers guide to the galaxy on the boiler.

Got both of the best works by the brilliant psychonaught Aldous Huxley to chew on too.

Some QiGong books as well.

Got through about 40 pages of animal farm earlier.

Doesn't take long to get into the childlike imaginary state reading gets you into. Allows you to flex your imagination, visual interpretations of words? You don't get alot of that thesedays in the 3D, graphic obsessed world.

I found huge solice in the pacific during a brief depressive phase in Tonga, took to reading Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon back to back, Red Dragon first. I really got sucked in and found solice there.

I feel I've a healthy mental flow if I can sit and read? If I can't I'm too bloody pent up or hyper.

Anyone reading anything good?

I'm gonna hit the top100 list and make up for lost time.

Sunday 06 feb.

Played since 2pm, probably go 12hrs today.

Been playing ok, bit aggressive and loud but chipping up a stack here and there. I've not really donked off much money today, through mistakes, dumb calls or ego.

Tournament games, you buy in for whatever and then play till you run out of chips.

I have one aim now, to go all the way, I aim to win the game if there are 10000players the first 9 get most of the cash the rest is split between top 10% .

I play loose and hard today and change my raising patterns, speed and try to stay the crazy guy, so everyone wants to play me or fears me, I draw guys in. Ego's wanna mess me up cause I am everything they aren't, the ones who are wise try to trap me, it's an easy game. The rest are limited also, but some shine through, most expose a pattern, weakness, so they can be read then placed into a behaviour pattern group/s and then manipulated.

No luck today, everyhand I've been deep in a game, looking to make a jump up the pay scale, as in got all my chips in against a weak guy with less chips (so I survive) he's rivered me or some sick fuck running hand made.

Shit kicked outta me all day at the vital times. I've played the beat the donkey game all day and the donkey has sucked me dry, how are they so bloody lucky.

Anyway who cares I've been playing well, I don't give a shit.

I'm just gonna sit here maximising my chances everyhand, then come the results.

Stay clear of annoyance from shit players, it was my weakness.
This is my cycling thread, so please make your own if you want to convey your enjoyment of exercise.

I like the 52 tooth chain ring, it spins better, the 170 arms are much better, but now super limber the 172.5mm also have benefits, it's a 10minute swap. Body has to tune into the new position, then see what happens, reckon on a month to settle fully.

Legs are big but there is not balance after loosening the ligaments, stretching muscle: it's a long game of tuning the lot to work in harmony to get max wattages.

Plus peak winter physical energy will never be that of a summerday.

My hands are always a nice pink colour now, usually hot and stripping off, my circulation has improved so bloody much, it's taken 5 years off me.

I've noted my viens are getting alot bigger, in my legs, arms and hands. I'm coming strong, body is regenerating to deal with the stress I am giving it, it takes time, atleast 2 years to turn it around. My viens today look like they did when I was 18. Loose and large. Can't wait for summer to get charged and cycle everywhere I want to go. 100milers if I want, it's almost effortless at under 18mph on the roady.

My aim this summer is get muscle balance and my lower back sorted, I want to be able to go 25mph on the flat for long periods, to average 19-20mph everywhere regardless of distances.
